Prednisone Information

Prednisone is a drug from the group of hormones of the adrenal cortex (glucocorticosteroids). It contains the substance prednisolone.

Form release:

– Tablets of 1 mg of active substance in each;

– Tablets of 5 mg of active substance in each;

– Tablets of 20 mg of active substance in each;

– Tablets of 50 mg of active substance in each.

Indications for use of Prednisone

Prednisone is given to patients according to the following indications:

– Bekhterev’s disease;

– Inflammation of the spinal cord and membranes;

– Non-infectious arthritis;

– Edematous processes of vertebrae and its structures;

– Osteoarthritis;

– Severe soreness in the spine;

– Injuries of the joints and nerves of the spine;

– Osteochondrosis;

– Lack of efficiency from the treatment of the spine with other medications.

Contraindications to the use of Prednisone

Prednisone is contraindicated in the following diseases:

– Hypertonic disease;

– Illness of Itenko-Cushing;

– Allergy to the drug and its components;


– Jade;

Pregnancy (especially up to 12 weeks);

– Lactation period.

The operating principle of Prednisone

Getting into the systemic circulation, Prednisone goes to the affected tissues, penetrates into specific receptors and causes a number of chemical reactions. Instructions for use of Prednisone

Prednisone should be taken orally, swallowing whole and with enough liquid. Initially, the drug must be taken at 20-30 mg per day to achieve a therapeutic effect (improving the patient’s condition). Then gradually reduce the dosage to 5-10 mg per day. In extreme cases, the initial dosage can be increased to 50-100 mg per day, and up to 15 mg per day. The maximum daily dosage is 100 mg, single dose is 15 mg.

Children the drug is prescribed depending on the weight of the patient – 1-2 mg per kg per day, dividing into 4-5 receptions. The maintenance dosage is 300-600 g per kg per day.

The course of treatment is individual and varies from 1 week to several months. Cancellation of the drug should be done gradually reducing daily intake.

Side effects of Prednisone

– Obesity;

– Increased fragility of bones;

– Increased body hair in women;

– Violation of the menstrual cycle;

– Ulcers in the digestive tract;

– Increased blood sugar;

– Violation of sexual function;

– Adrenal insufficiency.

If such symptoms occur, it is necessary to take symptomatic medications, as far as possible to reduce the dosage of Prednisone as much as possible or to cancel its reception.

No cases of drug overdose have been reported.

Special instructions

In pregnancy, the drug can be prescribed only as a last resort, because there may not be predictable effects on the development of the fetus. From breastfeeding for the period of treatment Prednisone must be abandoned.

Children from 3 years of age the drug is prescribed only under the strict supervision of a doctor and in extreme cases.

Alcoholic drinks do not affect the work of Prednisone.
